Port to SQL DMC "special workshop" in Orlando

Feedback of the workshop

We had 9 "pupils" during this workshop and we are pleased to announce their 'results' :

Hans Vinckier : wins the best pupil certificate <g>
Not only did he port his main application but also took us all by surprise when he announced during the workshop that he had also ported a second application in some 20 odd minutes!

Graham Edhouse did have a few problems grasping the "folders" used to create his new SQL application but by the end of the CIDC all went well for him also.

Brent Engel fought (so did we all trying to help him) with a simple generated wizarded application on a Ported SQL Table till we discovered it was running perfectly if we forgot the Clarion generated app and hand build it with a Frame and a wizarded browse and Form as the clarion generated app does not accept a dsnless approach.

Bill Shields kept on waiting for us all to carry on as we was way ahead on them .... always a step or two ahead.

Lisa Daugherty has another problem in her DCT (a regression bug introduced in DMC) which was fixed in the plane returning from Orlando and now her application compiles fine in SQL from her latest reports.

Arnold succeeded in porting his DCT to SQL which for him was a big step formwrd and I will be helpinh him in personal TeamViewer sessions till his application (when it is ready) ports .... Merci Arnold for playing with Alexis 'Maître des cérémonies" on Saturday morning as I had missed my connection flight in Washington - they both had all "pupils" install SQL server on their machines and all was perfectly done.

Alexis a SPECIAL Thank you to you for all the help you extended to all during this workshop!
(remember I owe you a personal teamViewer session to teach you how to deploy your application)

Stephen was present during the workshop : he was not there to port his application but to learn the technique as his company wants to offer the DMC Port to SQL as a service to their clients (you all) so he was sitting aside in the room and we did a "special" workshop for him.

We discovered some more special coding "cases" on Wolfgang Kirsch's application and a bug in DMC on Paul Mainstone DCT.

Those were corrected the next day and a special build issued to allow them a full Port to SQL during the CIDC.

A BIG Thank You also to Michael GOULD who came to visit us specialy on Sunday and who helped a LOT - mainly by explaning us the PostGre SQL experience he has - and a lot of SQL keys tips and tricks!

1) Started using DMC back in Nov. The improvements in many areas has protected my investment.

2) I find the support excellent, and the only reason it takes about a day to get fixes and requested improvements into the package, I blame on time zone differences <g>

3) Where it used to take overnight to process my solution to port to SQL, it now takes about 30 minutes.

4) DMC is very good at calling attention to areas of an app or dct or both that may be dodgy (SQL-wise) so you may affect changes. I've been doing this to a live deployed app and while they are still on TPS, its very much SQL friendly now and I've needed zero changes in 19 apps. Only one app needed attention and that was to delete a large embed.

5) Deployment of the data transfer program was a bit tough to understand, but after working with JP on this, this is vastly improved and deployment is now very easy as you do get an example app where all you need to do is change a few variables to make it work.

I can now add anything I want to the TPS program and within 35 minutes DMC creates a SQL version that compiles without error and even transfers all the data to SQL!

I have installed sql 2005 on my pc - Customer uses SQL 2008 - OK - My boss has 2008 - But how to use the manager????

DMC just did it - ODBC to the other PC, and use it as SQL manager.

I could have spent rest of the day on installing, shift to another pc etc.

So - Thanks for the help, DMC...
