| "1) Started using DMC back in Nov. The improvements in many areas has protected my investment.
2) I find the support excellent, and the only reason it takes about a day to get fixes and requested improvements into the package, I blame on time zone differences
3) Where it used to take overnight to process my solution to port to SQL, it now takes about 30 minutes.
4) DMC is very good at calling attention to areas of an app or dct or both that may be dodgy (SQL-wise) so you may affect changes. I've been doing this to a live deployed app and while they are still on TPS, its very much SQL friendly now and I've needed zero changes in 19 apps. Only one app needed attention and that was to delete a large embed.
5) Deployment of the data transfer program was a bit tough to understand, but after working with DMC support on this, this is vastly improved and deployment is now very easy as you do get an example app where all you need to do is change a few variables to make it work." |

"If you're considering a move to SQL you must take a look at DMC. First it will identify all the reserved words in your dictionary structure. You can choose to fix them yourself or let DMC rename them for you automatically. Then you get to see your dictionary in a whole new light and fix old mistakes and SV headaches. I like the part that standardizes all your Dates to the same format (that you select) and how it tells Decimal columns to be Right Justified with 1 indent instead of Decimal 12 (or how ever you want them justified).
When you compile your code DMC has thoughtfully inserted custom comments to help fix common problems. In your code, next to many errors it will say things like this. ! Loop until EOF(mytable) is not supported by SQL Try this code instead (and he gives example code for you to consider). When you have it working in SQL, go back to the TPS version and use comment/uncomment line/block to save your changes there. Now, you have a solid TPS program that can be converted in minutes to SQL. You can even combine the TPS and SQL into a single application so you can ship one program and it will work in both environments.

Not only can you totally modify your schema, you can easily add columns and values, calculate values, do lookups into other tables and so much more. It even has a Runtime version that you can wrap up in your installer and send to your client when they do the update. This tool started out as a "toy" and has matured to IMO the most usable and functional tool around. It also isn't stuck on just Clarion. It can be used with just about any file type. You can even take for example a CSV file and import it into a SQL table. I do this all the time." |
